Nadirsyah Hosen is known for his expertise on Shari'a and Indonesian law. He is a former associate professor at the School of Law, the University of Wollongong. Since July 2015 he has moved to teach at Monash University Faculty of Law, widely considered as one of the top law schools in the world.
He is the first and the only Indonesian-born Australian scholar to be appointed as a full-time academic in an Australian law school. He completed his first PhD (Law) at the University of Wollongong and a second PhD (Islamic Law) at the National University of Singapore. He then worked for two years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at TC. Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland. His articles have been published in internationally recognised and refereed journals such as the Nordic Journal of International Law (Lund University), Asia Pacific Law Review (City University of Hong Kong), Australian Journal of Asian Law (University of Melbourne), European Journal of Law Reform (Indiana University), Asian Journal of Comparative Law (National University of Singapore), Journal of Islamic Studies (Oxford University), and Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (Cambridge University).

He served as a Member of Shariah Supervisory Council at Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad since 2011 until April 8, 2017. He is also the Chairman of Tazkia University College of Islamic Economics and Chairman of Asia Capital Asset Management, the founder of Asyki Islamic Family Insurance in Indonesia, Member of Indonesia National Shariah Board and Financial Service Authority Development Committee. He served member of Board of Commissioner and Shariah Advisor in several Islamic financial institutions, including Securities Commission of Malaysia, Dar al-Takaful Dubai, Bank Negara Malaysia, Indonesian Export Import Bank (“EXIM Bank”), and at Takaful Insurance Company Indonesia.
